The world of bacteria is rich and complex, with around 10 million different species already identified… and that’s just a tiny fraction of the actual number present on earth. Our intestines alone are home to more than 1,000 species, or almost 40,000 billion bacteria, making up our intestinal microbiota, which is probably the most densely populated ecosystem on the planet. For each of these species, there is a multitude of strains with diverse and varied characteristics.
Many of these diverse intestinal flora are of no particular interest to our bodies. Some of these can be harmful, sometimes leading to or the development of more or less serious illnesses.
Others, on the other hand, provide real health benefits for our bodies and also help to maintain the balance of our intestinal flora.
All these micro-organisms are commonly known as “probiotics”.
